Daegu offers specialized training programs in addition to formal school curricula in order to improve the competitiveness and capacity of local artists. These include the Next-Generation Arts and Cultural Planners Training Course and the Musical Academy which is designed to nurture musical actors and writers. The programs draw artists from all over the country. Of special note is the Opera Master Class offered to college music majors, for which famous opera singers based in Europe are invited to give intensive lessons. All those training courses help boost the strength of Daegu as a city specialized in performing arts.

Next-Generation Arts and Cultural Planners Training Course

Cultivation of Creative Planners to Lead Local Arts and Culture

In its endeavor to build a city centered on arts and culture, Daegu has implemented the Next-Generation Arts and Cultural Planners Training Course at the studios in Beomeo Art Street from March to October every year since 2013. The program is designed to nurture creative planners who will play a leading role for local arts and culture. In order to produce planning specialists in two areas—performance and exhibition—top-class lecturers such as professors in arts and culture, expert planners, and business managers conduct the course with focus on practical matters rather than theory, actual case-based lectures, and hands-on experience.

Musical Academy

Hub for Cultivation of Musical Talents

The Organizing Committee of the Daegu International Musical Festival runs the Musical Academy in order to nurture future talents who will contribute to the development of musicals. It offers training courses in two tracks—creator (playwriting / composition) course and musical actor course—and anyone seeking to pursue a career in musicals can apply.

  • a musical produced through collaborative work of students

Students work with qualified lecturers through a step-by-step process for nine months from April. Participating in workshops, reading performances, and a final presentation, they have real experiences of being on stage. In particular, students should bring out the result of “production of an original musical” through their collaborative work. Integrated lectures and special lectures are given early in the curriculum to encourage communication and exchange among students./p>

Opera Academy

A Special Class to Expand the Base of Opera

The Opera Academy is a program launched by the Daegu Opera House to expand the base of opera, and has separate courses for adults and for children. The Opera Class, which is open to the general public, provides opportunities to learn about opera with lessons on vocalization and opera arias as well as opera appreciation.

The Opera Class for Children offers lessons on the characteristics of opera, basics of vocalization, and the experience of musical instruments. A real strength of the academy is high-quality lectures delivered by singers who are currently active on stage. Also, students can have an opportunity to demonstrate their competence at the graduation concert.

Audition for Advance into Overseas Theaters

A High-Standard Project to Discover and Nurture Young Singers

The Daegu Opera House holds auditions to send new singers in Daegu to Europe’s theaters by signing a memorandum of understanding with Italy’s Opera di Firenze and Germany’s Staatsoper Hamburg which operate some of the best opera academies in Europe. Famous figures such as Gianni Tangucci, director of Academy Young Artists of Opera di Firenze, and Constanze Könemann, opera director of Opernstudio of Staatsoper Hamburg, have visited Daegu in person to find talented singers. Based on contracts with the Opera di Firenze and the Staatsoper Hamburg, young singers selected from the auditions receive a scholarship for eight to eleven months sponsored by these theaters and the Daegu Opera House, and obtain their career opportunity as a professional singer.

In addition, the Daegu Opera House has launched the program to foster new young singers in collaboration with the world-famous Deutsche Oper Berlin.

Projects to Reduce the Culture Gap in Daily Life

Anyone Can Become a Creator of Culture and I Am a Citizen Artist!

Daegu operates various programs to reduce the culture gap between social classes and across geographic locations and to help a broader spectrum of people enjoy their cultural life. For example, the city conducts programs to dispatch professional artists (mentors) and coordinators to community arts and culture clubs for the support of their activities, improve the infrastructure related to arts and culture in daily life, and cultivate coordinators in the fields concerned.

For the cultural participation of workers in small- and medium-sized companies, the Arts and Culture in Daily Life for Workers program is offered through the Workers Welfare Center. Also, the “One Company, One Club” campaign is executed to support workers’ cultural activities at workplaces.

There are many other programs aimed at reducing the culture gap. Under the Visiting Troupe program, arts groups visit culturally isolated people and places to give performances. The Integrated Cultural Voucher project is implemented to provide the underprivileged with more opportunities to appreciate arts and culture. The vouchers allow admission to various cultural events for a maximum of 60,000 won per person. Also, seniors and those with special needs benefit from free transportation to performance venues.
