International Performance of Daegu’s Original Musical Turandot

Daegu International Music Festival (DIMF) is a platform where original Korean musicals can go global. After signing a memorandum of understanding with the New York Musical Theater Festival in 2009, Daegu and New York have been bringing each other’s outstanding original musicals to the stage. This has turned the DIMF into an art market for musicals from all over the world. In 2010, the DIMF committed to holding forums and exchanging musicals with Dongguan City and the Beijing Oriental Songlei Musical Development Company. After its opening performance at the DIMF in 2010, the original musical Turandot was performed in Hangzhou, Dongguan, and Ningbo in China in 2012. The musical was invited to the 16th China Shanghai International Arts Festival in 2014, rising in status as a global opera.

Daegu Opera House Targets Asian Market After Success in Europe

Starting with the 2003 Pre-Daegu International Opera Festival, the Daegu Opera House has continued to promote exchanges with overseas theaters and organizations each year. After performing its own production of La Traviata at the Shanghai Grand Theater in 2010, the Opera House performed its own operas in Germany (2011), Turkey (2012), and Poland (2013), thus demonstrating its outstanding opera production capabilities to the world. Its La Traviata, which was staged at the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe (Germany) in 2015, received an explosive response, and the performance of Il barbiere di Siviglia (The Barber of Seville), which was produced by the Daegu Opera House, was sold out at the Teatro Municipale Giuseppe Verdi di Salerno (Italy).

In 2016, Korean opera singers performed Madama Butterfly at Theater Bonn in Germany, Beethoven’s hometown, garnering high praise from the local audience. The Opera House plans to perform its own production of Puccini’s La Bohème in Hiroshima, Japan in May 2017.

The Daegu Opera House has also been officially invited to join the jury at the most prestigious global competitions such as the International Competition for Opera Singers “Ferruccio Tagliavini,” the International Opera Competition “Magda Olivero,” the International Competition for Young Opera Singers “Riccardo Zandonai,” and the Concorso Internazionale “Vincenzo Bellini.” In addition, it is carrying out exchanges in diverse fields by signing performance exchange agreements with Europe. .
