A debut stage of Hun Chung in Daegu, a new rising conductor from the city
Familiar classical music with easy and fun commentary

<Matinee Concert> will be held in the Grand Hall of the Daegu Concert House, 11am on the August 22nd (Tue.) You can enjoy the elegant classical music played by Daegu Symphony Orchestra during your quiet and peaceful weekday mornings. Usually, orchestras have this kind of concert in the evening; however, breaks the stereotype and performs in the morning. Also, it offers light and familiar repertory for the morning time. For the concert, a new-rising conductor Hun Chung will be a guest who will collaborate with Sung-yeon Kim, a pianist, and Hwa-yeong Lee, a soprano. Considering that the concert’s major audience, who are housewives, senior citizens, and students, the concert will offer explanations as well.
○ Notably, this concert is the debut stage for Hun Chung in Daegu, who is also from Daegu. He came into the spotlight after winning third place in conducting the part of Wiener Musikseminar International Master Classes and Competition in 2014.
○ The concert will start with an overture of the operetta, Die Fledermaus by Johann Strauss II, known as ‘The Waltz King’. The widely loved overture has major melodies of Die Fledermaus, which was written as a polka and waltz. After that, the pianist will play the first movement of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto no. 1. It is in sonata form with an added orchestral exposition where you can feel his rigidity.
○ You can also enjoy the bridge music from Cavalleria Rusticana, Mascagni’s one-act opera. Unlike previous operas with a background of a royal court or a mansion, it realistically describes a story of love, betrayal, and revenge happening in a Sicilian village in the 1890s. Following the performance, Hwa-yeong Lee will sing “Summer Time” from Gershwin’s opera Porgy and Bess and Lala’s “Granada”.
○ The last stage will be the William Tell Overture, one of Rossini’s opera. Lately, it is played independently more than played as a whole opera, and also it is the most famous piece among Rossini’s overtures. Enjoy the cheerful sounds of the trumpet, and imagine the soldiers’ dashing march from the magnificent tune.
