Daegu is the cradle of Korea’s modern culture and art scene. Today, you can still find traces of modern culture and art in central Daegu. In its theaters, diverse performances such as operas and musicals are constantly being staged. UNESCO, recognizing the city’s value in cultural potential, has designated Daegu as a UNESCO creative city of music in 2017.
We are putting diverse efforts into creating global culture networks that center on Daegu. The city is holding regular global policy forums every year and has been promoting exchanges in the field of culture and arts with actively engaging creative cities of music. Partnerships with other creative cities have helped Daegu in offering diversified, magnificent performances.
The ultimate goal of UNESCO Creative City of Music Daegu is to build a platform to play as a bridge between Daegu and Global Stage.
- UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN)
- The UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) was launched as a part of the international solidarity project for cultural diversity, aiming to grow the culture industry using each city’s cultural assets and creativity. Through this process, we expect increased cooperation; the economic, social, and cultural development of member cities; and the reaching of UNESCO’s ultimate goal of cultural diversity and sustainable growth. UCCN currently consists of 295 cities in 90 countries that fall into 7 fields: craft & folk art, literature, music, design, media arts, gastronomy and flim. The member cities within Korea are: Seoul (design, 2010), Icheon (craft & folk art, 2010), Jeonju (gastronomy, 2012), Busan (film, 2014), Gwangju (media arts, 2014), Tongyeong (music, 2015), Daegu (music, 2017), Bucheon (literature, 2017), Jinju (craft & folk art, 2019), Wonju (literature, 2019), and Gimhae (craft & folk art, 2021).
